The Habitat ReStore parking lot will soon be buzzing with activity as the site of Habitat’s 5th Women Build Event. Women from the community will be constructing the walls for Habitat’s next home located in Garner, Iowa. A total of 30 women are signed up to build on Saturday, October 5th, from 8:30am-4:00pm. The response was overwhelming but there are more volunteer spots to fill. Please consider signing up online . Members of the community are welcome to stop by and check out the action.
“The opportunity to participate in something like this is so impactful,” explains Melissa Schoneberg, Habitat’s executive director. “Our volunteer supervisors are here to help throughout the day to ensure everyone, no matter their skill level, gets a chance to be part of the process. And by the end of the day everyone is more confident in the work we’ve done, and each has had a hand in forming the building blocks that the rest of the home will be built on.”
The home is being built for Mara and Steven Bierbrodt-Gayken and their five children. Sponsors for the event include Jitters Coffee Bar, North Iowa Community Credit Union, and Thrivent Financial.
The walls will be transported to the site where the foundation has been prepared early next week and the wall-raising is scheduled for October 12, 2019 in Garner. Many church groups, business groups, and volunteers will be needed to complete the home on schedule by early 2020.
