Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa is pleased announce the groundbreaking of the next home to be built in Garner. The public is invited to the ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 23 at 5:30 pm at 1080 Grove Ave. Support for this project comes from the City of Garner, proceeds from the Habitat ReStore, and private donations.
This project will be built as a home for Steven and Mara Gayken and their five children. It will feature 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a finished basement. Most of the framing will be constructed at the Women Build event, and volunteers will be on site starting in July. Anyone who wants to volunteer to help with the construction or to provide food for the volunteers can sign up at the groundbreaking, or call the Habitat office at (641) 424-8978.
Habitat for Humanity serves local residents who are in need of safe and affordable housing, but who are unable to qualify for a traditional bank loan. Habitat raises the money needed to build the homes, and then provides affordable mortgages with low monthly payments spread out over 20-30 year terms. The homes are primarily built by volunteers, along with the future homeowners, in order to keep the payments affordable for the families.
Habitat volunteers and staff are currently working on several home repair projects throughout Habitat’s six-county service area. To inquire about volunteering, to make a donation, to apply for housing assistance, or to get more information about Habitat for Humanity or the ReStore, call (641) 424-8978 or visit the website at www.habitatnci.org.
